Propane tanks come in many sizes, and the right size tank can depend on a number of factors, with the average Southern States Energy delivery customer needing a tank between 120 and 1,000 gallons.

First, consider your location. Propane tanks used for heating in colder climates may need to be larger than those in warm climates, even if the size of the home is the same.

Next, consider the size of the home or building and the number of appliances you will need to run on propane. For homes that are 3,500 sq ft or less with multiple appliances, a 500-gallon tank is generally recommended. For homes that are larger than 3,500 sq ft, or with additional usage requirements or appliances, customers may want to select a 1,000-gallon tank. For commercial or agricultural applications, tanks larger than 1,000-gallons are available.

If your needs require a larger tank, you may be concerned about it being an eyesore in your yard. Luckily, many tanks are installed upright or horizontally and some can be buried below ground. For above-ground tanks, landscaping can be used to hide the tank so that it blends seamlessly into your yard.

If you are not heating your entire home with propane, smaller, portable tanks called cylinders are sold and refilled at many Southern States locations. Propane cylinders are ideal for running a backup generator, activities like outdoor grilling, or running patio heaters.
