I just signed up—why can’t you fill my tank today?
We get this question a lot. The short answer is safety first. Before we can fill your tank, we have to make sure everything is set up properly and safe to use. That takes a few required steps.
What has to happen before my first fill?
For new customers, we typically need to:
- Take a look at your tank and setup
- Make sure everything meets Gas Code
- Run a system safety check (like a leak test)
- Ensure the regulators are installed properly and don't exceed the manufacturer's recommended lifespan
It’s all about making sure your system is good to go before introducing propane.
Why do you have to do a leak test?
Any time propane service is started (or restarted), a leak test is required—it’s actually part of the safety rules.
This helps us confirm:
- There are no leaks in the lines or your gas appliances
- Everything is sealed and working properly
If there’s even a small issue, we fix it first—then fill the tank.
What are you checking during the inspection?
We’re mainly looking at things like:
- Tank condition (no damage, rust issues, etc.)
- Valves and regulators
- Proper placement and clearance
- Any visible lines or connections
- For underground propane tanks we perform cathodic protection testing and probe around the tank and lines for gas leaks
If something doesn’t look right, we’ll let you know and get it taken care of before filling.
Why does my tank have to meet certain requirements?
Propane tanks are regulated equipment, so they have to meet safety standards. If a tank is:
- Too old or out of certification
- Pitted from corrosion
- Missing important information like a manufacturer's data plate
- Damaged
We’re not allowed to fill it until it’s fixed, recertified, or replaced.
Can’t you just fill it now and check later?
We wish it were that simple—but no. Filling a tank before confirming everything is safe can lead to serious problems like leaks or fire hazards. That’s why the checks always come first.
Is this just your company’s rule?
No—this is industry-wide. These steps come from national safety standards that all propane companies have to follow.
How long does this take?
It depends on scheduling and whether everything passes inspection right away. Once we’ve confirmed everything is safe, we’ll get your tank filled as quickly as we can.
