In 1923, a group of farmers couldn’t source quality seed that performed well in the Commonwealth, so they joined forces to create Virginia Seed Service. In 1933 it became Southern States Cooperative and soon expanded to include feed, agronomy inputs, energy, and farm supplies. In 2020, Southern States joined GROWMARK to leverage the advantages a broader cooperative system would bring to its members; today we operate 75 company-owned retail locations and maintain a working relationship with several locally-owned Southern States-branded cooperatives.

We’re proud to perpetuate that legacy, and we look forward to continuing to help our customers and members harvest the benefits of working together for a bountiful future, just as those founding growers envisioned more than 100 years ago.
